Mistakes to avoid when going wine tasting
Whether you're new to the wine scene or a seasoned sipper, how you prepare for a wine tasting can make or break the experience. To help you get the most out of every swirl, sniff, and sip, here are 5 common mistakes to avoid before heading to your next wine tasting.
1. Skip the Toothpaste (Sort Of)
Brushing your teeth before a tasting? Totally fine — but don’t go straight from the sink to the vineyard. Toothpaste can wreak havoc on your palate, leaving behind a minty residue that mutes the delicate flavors of wine. If you must brush, be sure to eat a little something afterward to reset your tastebuds.
2. Leave the Lipstick at Home
We love a bold lip as much as the next person, but lipstick and wine glasses are not a good mix. Not only does it smudge the glass, but it also interferes with the aromas in the bowl. You’ll end up smelling your makeup more than your Merlot — and nobody wants that.
3. Ditch the Coffee Right Before You Sip
Coffee lovers, beware! That morning latte may seem harmless, but it coats your palate and lingers with bitter notes that can distort the taste of your first few wines. Give yourself some time (and water!) between your last sip of coffee and your first pour of wine.
4. Avoid Perfume or Cologne
Wine tasting is a full sensory experience — especially smell. Wearing perfume or cologne can overpower the wine’s natural aromas and distract both you and those around you. Opt for a fragrance-free day to fully appreciate the bouquet in your glass.
5. Don’t Overdo It
It’s a tasting, not a happy hour. There’s no need to chug or try to finish every pour. Use the spittoon (yes, even the pros do!) and pace yourself. Tasting is about appreciation, not inebriation — and you'll enjoy the experience so much more if your palate stays sharp.
